Manhattan East History

Founded in 1981, The Manhattan East School for Arts and Academics (M.S. 224) is a pioneer of the small school movement. Our guiding vision has remained the same since our foundation: We believe that students, parents, teachers, and administrators are partners in establishing the finest possible educational atmosphere.  As such, we were pioneers of Shared Decision Making practices and continue to embrace this principle through our School Leadership Team (SLT), which is comprised of parents, teachers, administrators, and members of the Parent Advisory Council (PAC). Through our SLT and PAC we support parent involvement in the development of our school community.

Our Student Body

Manhattan East attracts more than 200 students from every borough, creating an enthusiastic student body from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. As one of the most diverse schools in New York City, our community celebrates our differences as we discover how, deep down, we're all very similar. This makes Manhattan East a wonderful and unique environment.

Our students are highly motivated, with a proven record of academic excellence and interest in various forms of artistic expression. Our students celebrate each other's talents as they develop and grow in our advanced art and academic setting.

In addition, we have a small special education program that services students in both a 12:1 and 12:1:1 setting. At Manhattan East we believe every student can grow and become successful.

Our Mission

At Manhattan East, our school mission is to provide a safe and caring learning environment for our students that fosters respect for self and others, high academic expectations, and an appreciation and a working knowledge of the arts.

The approach goes beyond a mere integration of the arts into the curriculum. It recognizes each student's need to achieve both academic excellence and individual artistic expression. We use the best of both traditional methods and new technology. All this is facilitated by dedicated teachers working in collaboration with, and supported by parents, staff, and the community. Manhattan East provides a place where students can grow in many different dimensions.

Our Philosophy

We believe that children should be active participants in learning rather than passive recipients of information. Through the arts and literature, we try to give each child an opportunity to find and express their own inner voice. All children deserve a rigorous academic education that reflects the multicultural make-up of the nation and is cognizant of the fact that the world has become a global village.

Our Graduates

Throughout our history, Manhattan East students have achieved high acceptance rates at New York’s specialized high schools, including: LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, Stuyvesant High School, Bronx Science, Beacon, High School of Art and Design, and other highly acclaimed high schools throughout New York City.
