Math

Mathematics at Manhattan East Middle School is a rigorous course that incorporates math across the curriculum. Students are instructed a grade or two above in mathematics. Students master skills needed to prepare them for an important transition to more advanced mathematical topics, while developing abstract reasoning and symbolic manipulation skills for both inside and outside the classroom. The sophisticated instructions are fast paced and engage students in critical thinking and logical strategies needed for successfully solving various problems. They are encouraged to think as Engineers, Scientists, Logicians, Architects, Doctors, Nurses , Designers, Topologist and other professions where mathematicians are in great demand.

Sixth and seventh grade mathematics is an advanced, fast-paced, rigorous course of study that incorporates three years of middle school math into a two year program in order to prepare students to take Regents Algebra I in 8th grade, normally a 9th grade course.

Instruction engages students in critical thinking and logical strategies needed for successfully solving various mathematical problems. Students are encouraged to think as Engineers, Scientists, Logicians, Architects, Doctors, Nurses, Designers, Topologists and other professions where mathematicians are in great demand.

Sixth Grade

mathematics is about (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Seventh Grade

mathematics is about (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

8th Math, Algebra I

The focal point of this course is the algebra content strand. Algebra provides tools and ways of thinking that are necessary for solving problems in a wide variety of disciplines, such as science, business, social sciences, fine arts, and technology. This course will assist students in developing skills and processes to be applied using a variety of techniques to successfully solve problems in a variety of settings. The course culminates with the NYS Algebra I Regents exam in June of the students’ 8th grade year.
