MUSIC

Manhattan East Students learn how to read and write music;  listen to, analyze, and evaluate music performances; study the history of hip hop, jazz, and rock and roll; and make connections between music and other disciplines, history and culture.

Students have the opportunity to “major” as an instrumentalist and learn how to play the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, or Snare/Bass Drum.  Our goal is to prepare students for auditions into high school music programs across the city.  Advanced students also have the opportunity to expand their musical background by joining the Jazz Band, or Rock Band.

The Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Rock Band all perform for friends, family and peers at least 2-6 times a year.

Welcome to Drama Studio

The Drama Studio at Manhattan East is a project based education that provides students with acting skills and techniques necessary to pursue a study in the Performing Arts- such as: writing, producing, directing and video production.

Our sessions expose students to a variety of elements that will enhance their Creativity, Communication, Social, and Expressive Skills. It is our belief that our students can be empowered to create their own roles, projects, and shows.

FINE ART

Manhattan East Art Students work on developing a strong foundation in the visual arts. Art has its own language and students will learn about different artists, art styles, and cultures from around the world. We will explore learning through the elements of art and principles of design while examining how different techniques are used to achieve different goals. We will create our own masterpieces using a variety of art materials. Art is vital for self-expression and an understanding and appreciation of art is essential in today’s world where art is visible in all forms of visual communication.

6th grade Art- Exploring the Elements of Art & Principles of Design through specific art making projects and helping students improve their technical stills while learning how to create a visual story that has meaning.

7th & 8th grade Art majors - Students dive deeper into improving technical skills and visual story telling by working with themes while developing portfolios. Students have additional support if applying to the specialized Arts High Schools.

Some of our focus, for example, are projects related to Form & Space. We will develop our shading skills, work on how to create visual illusion of space in a 2D environment. We will be creating still life drawings, self-portraits and other types of portraits, perspective artworks, and much more.

Students have opportunities throughout the school year to showcase their art which is highly encouraged.
